Woman VLE Puspaben Harsabhai Prajapati has set up LED MMU Unit at Vadla village in Anand District, Gujarat. She is an FPS (Fair Price Shop) owner and also a CSC VLE. In the last 6 months, she has assembled 1000 bulbs and also sold 850 LED bulbs in Petlad, Anand. She had involved her family members to assemble bulbs. The VLE has gained expertise in work and is very happy with this unit.
“As a woman entrepreneur, I have faced many barriers which men normally do not face. As a mother of three children, it was quite challenging for me to strike a balance, and my entrepreneurial decision was often frowned upon. Further, it was a task to make my mark, especially in the technology space which is largely dominated by men,” Puspaben says.
The LED bulb assembly unit at Vadla village is changing tribals’ lives for the better. The unit, set up three years back, has not only given confidence to these women, but also slowly making them financially independent. The unit has employed 15 tribal women from the village.
52 years old Divyang Kantabai works with VLE Pushben, said, "I am illiterate, but I have now learnt the bulb assembly work. I am happy that after finishing the household work, we come to the unit and work for 4-5 hours in the afternoon." VLE also gives training for LED assembling and inspires them to start their own units.
VLE Pushpa says, “Assembling of LED lights does not require highly skilled manpower and the district I thought it was fit to create a sustainable business model for the local tribal people. Around 50 women previously worked with us, and have started their own units now.” She adds, “After association with CSC, the overall role and responsibility of women has transformed from domestic household to financial independence. Entrepreneurship through CSC enables us to be economically independent that leads to an improvement in not only the women, from the point of view of better health, education and skill but an improvement in their living condition also by being able to use cleaner fuel, better house, better sanitation, facilities and infrastructural facilities.”
Social entrepreneurship through CSC Vadla is enhancing the social inclusion of vulnerable groups.
Tearing down barriers that prevent tribal women from becoming successful social entrepreneurs will contribute to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and tackling the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19. It is providing a viable path forward for women and young people to earn a living and help address their communities’ needs while advancing the Inclusive Development Goals.
